The film

Ronny is a struggling comedian who stumbles into underground chessboxing to make ends meet, and discovers it's a front for a powerful Senator's criminal empire.

When his best friend is murdered for refusing to throw a match, Ronny's grief turns his comedy darker, sharper and viral. Teaming up with his fiancée, a forensic lawyer blocked by a corrupt system, he infiltrates the circuit to take the Senator's operation apart from within, armed with violence and dark humor.

What is
chessboxing?

A combat sport where athletes alternate between rounds of speed chess and boxing. Brains and brawn in the same ring, and one mistake in either can end the fight.

Funny Ronny puts it at the center of a genre film, where a chess move can be as deadly as a punch.

The market

Two of the world's biggest audiences.
One ring.

Chess fans and fight fans have never had a movie made for both of them. Funny Ronny is built to be the first.

Chess is having the biggest moment in its 1,500-year history.

Funny Ronny is my way of asking: how far would we go when the people who anchor us are ripped away?

An engineer-turned-filmmaker and the founder of Raninj Entertainment, Rahul tells universal stories with a South Asian essence. A former Illinois State Chess Champion and a karate black belt, he left engineering in 2024 to make films full time, just like Ronny left engineering for stand-up.

  • Upside Brown: co-creator of the 9-episode Hindi-English mockumentary now streaming on Amazon Prime and Tubi
  • Spiral Studios: co-founder and CEO of a deep-tech storytelling company that has collaborated with NASA
